Tory Conference: Get ready to mountain climb with Sherpa Dave

By Will Heaven: October 08th 2009 // Telegraph

In about ten minutes, the Conservative leader will take to the stage at Tory Conference. It will be the last time David Cameron addresses his party before the General Election, and it’s been confirmed: he’ll speak with notes, from a podium. The message is clear, then, that this isn’t the time for party tricks – Cameron must bring positive coherency to a conference of gloomy ideas.

Here’s what we know so far. The Tory leader will confront the “culture of irresponsibility” in Britain and promise to reward enterprise, self-sufficiency and hard work. He will try to sound optimistic, saying he is ready to be “tested” as Prime Minister. Don’t expect new policy. It’ll be about a better, Conservative future, with lots of “looking people in the eye”.

Sadly for the Tories, the headline-grabbing announcement about General Dannatt was scuppered yesterday. Its replacement looks to be a line about a mountain, and it’s superb. “There is a steep climb ahead”, Cameron will say, but the “view from the summit will be worth it”.

Well, we’re nowhere near base camp. But that doesn’t matter. Britain, get ready to climb with Sherpa Dave!
